Toyota Mark II and Cresta, imported from Japan

The Mark II and Cresta share their rear-drive platform with the Chaser. The turbocharged Mark II Tourer V is a drift and build favourite, and the Cresta, sold only in Japan, is the rarer, more understated sibling. Walltap Garage finds them in Japan and brings them to Texas and the rest of the US.

Three cars, one platform

In the 1990s Toyota sold three sedans on the same rear-drive JZX platform: the Mark II, the Chaser and the Cresta. They share much of their running gear, so the buying advice is similar across all three. The X100 generation ran from 1996, and the Chaser and Cresta nameplates both ended in 2001.

  • Mark II Tourer V: the turbocharged version, with the 2.5-litre 1JZ-GTE inline-six rated at 280 PS. The most sought-after Mark II.
  • Cresta: the third JZX sedan, sold only in Japan with the same rear-drive chassis. Fewer around, so allow more search time.
  • Chaser: see our Toyota Chaser page.

Can it be imported yet?

Each car becomes importable 25 years after its own build month under the 25-year rule, and it must also clear EPA and customs. Most X90 and X100 cars are already old enough; for anything built in the late 1990s or 2000s, we confirm the exact build date before you commit.

What to check before bidding

  • Real Tourer V? Confirm the trim and engine from the chassis and documents. Turbo conversions are common.
  • Factory manual or conversion, and the quality of the conversion work.
  • Drift history. Many have been modified. Look at repair marks, inspector notes and rust. Auction grades explained.
  • Engine swaps need individual EPA review.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between the Mark II, Chaser and Cresta?

They're three Toyota sedans on the same rear-drive JZX platform, with different bodies and styling. Much of the running gear is shared, so the buying checks are similar.

What is a Mark II Tourer V?

The turbocharged Mark II, using the 2.5-litre 1JZ-GTE inline-six rated at 280 PS. It's the one most enthusiasts look for.

Was the Toyota Cresta sold in the US?

No. The Cresta was sold only in Japan, so it has to be imported under the 25-year rule.

Are Mark IIs legal to import?

Yes, once the specific car is 25 years old from its build month and clears EPA and customs. Texas titling then follows the usual inspection and county tax office steps.

Do you have a Mark II or Cresta in stock?

We source to order from Japan. Tell us the spec and budget, and ask about any cars we currently have.

Is a Cresta harder to find?

Usually, as fewer come up. Allow more search time and keep some flexibility on colour or mileage.
